There are some bands that don’t need elaborate stage productions or gimmicks. They just need to plug in, turn up, and rip. That’s exactly what The Obsessed did when they took the stage at No Fun in Troy.
No Fun is the kind of venue that makes a show feel personaI. It’s intimate - almost like the old Valentine’s in Albany, only smaller. I arrived at the show just before The Obsessed took the stage and worked my way to the front. I perched myself on a monitor at the foot of the stage in hopes I would capture a little magic through my lens. As The Obsessed took the stage, the room was fully packed shoulder to shoulder, and the temperature inside made the chilly March evening fade. Everyone knew they were about to witness one of doom metal’s true pioneers.
The band kicked in and Wino remains an absolute force with his voice remaining true and his guitar tone massive. The grooves were remarkable as the band tore through a set heavy with “The Church Within” tracks. The band remained tight and never let up.
The Obsessed didn’t reinvent themselves that night and they didn’t have to. They came in, played a powerful set, and reminded everyone why they’ve remained one of doom metal’s most respected bands.
Simple as that!
